Population ageing, and its economic implications not only for advanced economies, has been debated for decades. In Italy, where life expectancy ranks among the highest globally and fertility rates have declined to historically low levels, demographers and economists underline the urgency of policy measures and structural reforms to mitigate adverse economic and social outcomes. Priority should be given to increasing labour force participation among young people, women, and the «young-old» (those aged 65 to 74), while simultaneously addressing the need for rapid improvements in productivity and cognitive skills, which are critical in an increasingly digital society. Ultimately, greater awareness of the importance of lifelong learning will be required across the entire life course.
