The world economy is being greatly affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. One of the main consequences is the marked rise in inflation. In Italy, banks are tackling this difficult situation from a position of substantial equilibrium. Policies for the distribution of profits and for provisions, however, must take due account of the considerable downside risks to economic developments. Cyclical difficulties must not lead intermediaries to reduce their commitment to responding to structural challenges, in particular those posed by both the technological and green transitions. Paying less attention to these aspects now would mean having to making up for lost time over the next few years.
