This article proposes, through the lens of Economic History, an analysis of the career of Jacques Delors, politician and commis d'Etat, trained at the Banque de France. Particular attention is paid to two decisive moments. The first coincides with the choices made by Delors as Minister for the Economy and Finance in the Mauroy government, particularly in that tournant de la rigueur which allowed the French currency, from March 1983, to remain in the Ems. The second coincided with his decade at the helm of the European Commission (1985-95). It is here that Delors' stature and the full weight of his contribution to the history of European integration emerge distinctly. The article traces its crucial aspects, turning its gaze to the three cornerstones of the single market, social dialogue and monetary union.
